PrEP PrEP You Should Know
PrEP stands for Pre-exposure prophylaxis. Pre means before, which is a drug taken before having sex.
It is another option for preventing HIV in addition to using condoms.
PrEP can be taken in 2 ways:
o Daily, every 24 hours at the same time.
o On-demand or PEP, which is at least 2 hours before having sex with a partner, 1 pill, 24 hours after having sex, and the last pill from the 2nd pill 24 hours later.
PrEP is not PEP. I repeat, PrEP is not PEP.
o PrEP stands for Pre-exposure prophylaxis. Pre means before, which is a drug taken before having sex.
o PEP stands for Post-exposure prophylaxis. Post means after. Taken after being exposed and must be taken within 72 hours of being exposed.
PrEP prevents HIV, but does not prevent other sexually transmitted diseases.
o PrEP prevents HIV almost 100 percent. But it cannot prevent other diseases.
Receiving PrEP requires a blood test every time.
o Every time we will receive PrEP, we must know our blood test results every time.
Receiving PrEP is like monitoring our health.
o Getting a blood test to receive PrEP is like taking care of our health because we will receive advice from the doctor to check our liver values, kidney values, or monitor other sexually transmitted diseases at the same time.
PrEP makes us worry-free and always ready.
o Both us and our partner are more confident when we know that we are both using PrEP.
PrEP is not available at Watsons or Boots pharmacies.
o PrEP must be received at a hospital only. It is not available at general pharmacies. If we want to receive PrEP, we must have a blood test first and have a negative blood test result before we can receive PrEP. If the result is positive and taking PrEP will cause the bacteria to become drug-resistant and make the treatment with antiretroviral drugs ineffective.
There is no cost for the blood test. Receive PrEP.
o If you book through the website www.testbkk.org, almost every clinic offers free blood test. And almost every clinic offers free PrEP and there will be lovely staff who do not stigmatize. Some private clinics may charge a fee, around 300-3200 baht for 3 months of PrEP.
PrEP is more convenient than you think
We can book PrEP through testBKK.org. We can choose a location near our home, a convenient day and time.
I believe that everyone who is reading this now has a mobile phone. We can set a reminder to take one pill every day so that we do not forget. If we forget to take it, we take it as soon as we remember within 6 hours. If we forget for more than 7 days, start counting from 1 again.
PrEP does not have to be taken for life. We can stop taking it. We can stop taking it after the last risk for 4 weeks and can start taking it again if we want.
