There is an interesting study on the infection of transgender women who have sex with men (TGWSM). It was found that anal sex may affect the infection because of the friction on the anal mucosa. The results of the study also found that the group that used hormone therapy (or take hormones) had more interest than the group that did not use hormones. This study collected data from a group of 520 people, both transgender women who have sex with men and men aged 18-59 years old. The study collected data in the United States and Thailand.

The reason why transgender women who have sex with men (transitioning from male to female, meaning males who are the sex they were assigned at birth and are planning to receive or are receiving female hormones) are at high risk of HIV infection and have a large number of infections is because of contact with the infection in the rectal mucosa.

Therefore, there is research to find the conclusion that female hormones that women take have an effect on the rectal mucosa or not, to study the factors that increase the risk of HIV infection in transgender women and to use the research results to develop prevention against this risk that may occur, which may be medicine or other medical technologies.

The research was conducted in 2 groups:

Transgender women who have sex with men and are HIV-free

Group 1 in the United States and Group 2 in Thailand
Aged between 18-59 years
Subgroups: Group 1 received hormones for more than 6 months and Group 2 were men who have sex with men (MSM / gay man)

The duration of the research will be 3-12 months. After starting to take hormones, there will be an appointment for the following checkups:

Ask about sexual behavior
Collect blood samples
Collect anal secretions

All participants will be asked to abstain from anal sex for 72 hours before and 7 days after the test and may also be involved in taking PrEP medication.
